What is Yin Yoga?

EHIAS MAGAZINE | Wednesday 21 December, 2022

Yin Yoga is a practice that emerged about 40 years ago, but has its roots in traditional Eastern practices dating back thousands of years.

It focuses on stretching the deep tissues of the body, such as ligaments, tendons, and fascia, rather than muscle strength.

The aim is to stimulate blood circulation and improve joint flexibility, while promoting a state of deep relaxation.

Yin Yoga is based on the idea that the human body is made up of two types of tissue:

- Yang tissue: which is the muscles and tendons

- Yin tissue: which is the joints, ligaments, and bones.

It aims to strengthen the yin tissues by consciously stretching them and holding poses for long periods of time.

Yin Yoga is considered a gentler form of yoga compared to other, more dynamic styles such as Vinyasa or Ashtanga Yoga. Poses are generally more passive and are often held for long periods of time, from 3 to 5 minutes, allowing the joints and deep tissues to open slowly and safely without straining.

Yin Yoga use meditation state by focusing on static stretching of the deep tissues of the body. The poses are long and allow for a deep meditative and relaxed state.

Le Yin Yoga est une pratique qui se concentre aussi sur la méditation. Les poses de Yin Yoga étant longue elle permettent de rentrer dans un état méditatif et de relaxation profond.

Benefits of Yin Yoga include:

Improved flexibility :
By targeting connective tissues such as tendons, ligaments, and fascia, which are usually neglected in more dynamic yoga practices.

Pain relief :
By allowing the joints to open and nourish themselves, reducing inflammation and pain.

Calming the mind :
Through relaxation and meditation, reducing stress and anxiety.
